Space Food - How it's made

By Terrance Franklin

Are you aware how astronauts eat their daily dietary intake if they're in space? Ever thought about how they may intake and swallow their food while they are suspended on air, weightless. The secret's in the planning. We always eat our meals with feet on the ground however it is different when you're outside of the earth. There are considerations regarding how meals are prepared - this involves the selection procedure, storage containers, plus the appropriate amount of vitamins and minerals. Space Food is somewhat more tricky than our typical stuff.

Generally, we make our food items by baking or preserving, but that's not how astronauts do it. They could determine which food to consume however it must be prepared eight to nine months in front of the mission. How tricky can these formulations be? Consider it this way, after we make our dinners, how many times will we think how many calories there are? Or are we even conscious of the minerals and vitamins each food features? I would say very little to simply no. Space foods are set not by the chef from your most costly restaurant in town but by dietitians, technicians and food researchers grouped together. Would you imagine what a space food appears like or its flavour?

The joint effort should ensure that every astronaut is eating the proper diet necessary for their body to adapt to the space environment. Example is the intake of iron. If you are on outer space, you have fewer red blood cells. This means that you need less iron when you are out there than when you are here. With regard on how these foods can be eaten, since it is impossible for you to cook if from there, space foods were pre-cooked and packed individually. Astronauts can enjoy their favorite food by heating or just adding hot water.

For anyone who is considering how dull the space food experience might be for any astronauts and if you are feeling sorry on their behalf simply because can't eat serious food, well rethink it. Space foods aren't in reality specialized foods but the same food items we have within our grocers. What about Tortillas? Shrimp rolls? Hot spices? Fat free yogurt? Cookies? H2o? Soda pop? Fruit drinks? They could have it all in space. But because they are on outer space, those foods will really look dull inside their packing containers but they certainly will taste exactly the same just like the way they taste here on the planet. I'm wondering if any astronauts would likely still lobby for that good food.

Space Food has gone a long way from flavorless to flavorful nowadays. Since the very first out of space exploration, variations have been introduced to make the food palatable. Although the astronauts can never eat the food the same way that we do, at least the food will not taste any farther than it does here. Although the astronauts are miles away from earth, bringing with them something that is earthly, just like the food that we have will make them feel that they are somehow, not really far away from home.
