Israel is located on the shore of the Meditarranean Sea bordering Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. It is the only Jewish majority state in the world and identifies itself as a Jewish and Democratic country.

The government is headed by a Prime Minister and has a parliamentary system and a representative democracy. Israel boasts a high standard of living. In fact, it has the highest in the Middle East. It is a developed nation. The main cities are Jerusalem which has the highest population and Tel Aviv which is the financial center.

Volatility in the region have has had an effect on tourism. However, the number of visitors is increasing. Over 3 million tourists came to Isreal in 2012. They come for the historical and religious sites as well as the temperate climate. There is much to be seen and experienced. For some, it is a part of their religious practice to make a trip to this country to see sites they have read about in religious texts.

Museums are in abundance throughout the country. There are more there per capita than anywhere else in the world. Jerusalem is home to many of those museums. Some are Yad Vashem, the Museum of Underground Prisoners, and Siebenberg House. Tel Aviv also has many. They include the Olympic Experience, Independence Hall and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Many pay homage to prominent Israeli figures. The cities of Arad, Holon and Haifa also have many museums to offer.

Sites of religious history and significance are, perhaps, the most common reason for a trip to Israel. Most are of Jewish significance While others are Islamic. The most famous Islamic site is the Dome of the Rock. It is a Muslim shrine as opposed to a mosque. It can be viewed from almost any area in Jerusalem. It sits upon a sacred stone. That stone is said to be the site of the ascension of Muhammed into heaven.

For those of the Jewish faith, the Wailing Wall is one of the most sacred sites. It can be found in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is a place of pilgrimage and has been for hundreds of years. It is believed to be the only piece left of the Holy Temple. Tradition says that the wall was built by King Solomen. Jews come to the wall to express thanks to God and to pray for mercy. At times of great distress in the world such as the Normandy Invasion, people flock to the wall.

Some who visit may want to focus on the sites associated with one religion or the other. Some may want to take advantage of the ecotoursim opportunities. Others may want to visit a resort. Private tours in Israel allow visitors to tailor their plans and itinerary to exactly what they want to visit and see.
