What To Know About Dishwasher Parts

By Myrtle Cash

The machines that are commonly used to clean eating utensils and dishes are dishwashers. Typically these are installed in homes, and may also be found in certain restaurants. Dishwasher parts will vary by features, model and manufacturer, but there are some standard components.

Unlike dishwashing that is done by hand, which usually involves a lot of scrubbing to remove dirt, these units clean by spraying water on the dishes. Typically this water is heated between 130 and 170 degrees on the Fahrenheit scale. Lower temperatures may be used for delicate cycles. There are various soaps and formulas, which come in many different forms, that are used to clean the dishes too.

Water is pumped into the device using one or many rotating spray arms. These blast the dishes with the cleaning solution too. When the wash cycle is finished, the water is drained out and more is added for rinsing. Once rinsing is completed, a heat element at the bottom of the structure heats air to dry the items.

Every device is different in its capacity, features, size, sound damping and plumbing. Because not all units have the same place settings, individuals are advised to check the compatibility before making the purchase of a new machine. Plates or dishes of non-standard size may not fit properly in the compartment. Dishwashers are typically installed in the kitchen, sometimes within cabinets. There are also portable versions.

Front-panel, drop-down doors are common for modern versions. This type of door allows for easy and complete access to the tub. Inside the tub there are baskets, or racks. These are where the items are stored during washing. Usually there are two or more racks and some models include cutlery baskets. The better quality models might include disposal units that act as miniature garbage disposals by removing food waste from the wash.

The inside of these structures is typically made using stainless steel or plastic. Stainless styles are preferred because they preserve heat, offer better sound damping and resist hard water. Other parts that are typically installed in these machines: electromechanical rotary switches, valves, bimetal switches, inline water heaters, sensors and wax motors. Most of the parts needed for machines can be replaced or installed by the owner. Many hardware and home stores sell replacement products. Owners should check the manual for their machine to figure out what item they need.

Manufacturer and model of dishwasher will impact what parts are inside. Some devices include a lot of features, which require a lot of pieces. Others are old-fashioned or simple in design and provide very basic capabilities. People shopping for a new washer should look into the different kinds that are available and see what fits their budget and needs.

There are many different dishwasher parts. Typically these different pieces are relative to the model and manufacturer of the machine used. The dishwasher is a mechanical device that washes utensils and dishes. A few standard parts for these structures include front panel doors, racks or baskets for items to be placed in and spray arms.
