Information On Lupus Bracelets And The Related Illness

By Carmella Watts

Lupus is the name of a chronic inflammatory disease that is known to affect different areas of the body. Included in the list are kidneys, the blood, skin and joints. This condition can lead to the immune system to attack the very cells and tissues they were made to protect, resulting in a lot of pain and damage. As a show of support to those who have this affliction, lupus bracelets are sold in a lot of stores, both online and physical.

The mild cases are often very manageable. Those experiencing this will be able to go about their daily lives without too much of a hassle since the pain will be tolerable. Some symptoms are more severe than others and there are people who struggle greatly with them. In the extreme cases, the pain is said to be unbearable and the quality of life is greatly reduced.

For all the trouble it causes, there is no clearly defined underlying cause. Within the medical community, this is what is referred to as an idiopathic illness. Attempts to understand it better have resulted in theories involving family histories of the disease although thus far, no definite genetic links have been documented.

Factors like the side effect of using certain medications for too long and overexposure to sunlight are theorized to be contributors to the development of the diseases. The immune system, which by now will have malfunctioned greatly, will no longer recognize and differentiate threats from normal cells. The direct results are the numerous aches and pains all over.

There are a few types to be defined. One is the discoid, which is identifiable by the rashes that appear on the neck, face or scalp. The rash is often red and scaly, causing some discomfort and loss of hair around the areas affected. It is known as a butterfly rash when it is on the face. It usually lasts for a few days, but some lasts for months and even years.

The more famous sub type is the systemic variant, which is also the more dangerous of the two. The organs affected are numerous. The heart, lungs, nervous system and kidneys are the ones most likely to be targeted. The number of organs damaged vary between one to several at the same time.

Join paint, fever, fatigue and the decrease in organ function are a few symptoms of systemic lupus. There may be periods of remission and periods of activity. These activities are known as flares and may last for several days and will come and go without explanation.

Diagnosing the illness can be difficult due to its complexity. Certain things can be performed, such as biopsies and blood tests. There are times when the best thing to produce would be a complete medical history. This can determine whether or not any close family members have been diagnosed similarly in the past.

Note that there is no cure that is generally accepted to work a hundred percent of the time. Symptoms can be alleviated but completely cured. They may respond to treatments, but it is never permanent and occasionally there will be little to no response. In the end, those who are suffering have little choice but to try and manage the disease on their own. Lupus bracelets will continue to be worn by supporters in the meantime.
