Pregnancy and Chiropractic Care - What You May Not Know

By Dr Steve Schram

Unfortunately, there are many expectant women who are unaware of the wonderful benefits of chiropractic treatment.Pregnant women can find a large amount of comfort during their pregnancy by seeking care from a chiropractor. The majority of women fear morning sickness and, of course, the delivery. But, for many pregnant women the strain on the lower back and the body in general is the real issue during pregnancy, especially later on in the third trimester. One of the most common complaints of mothers-to-be, according to the American pregnancy Association, is back pain. It is estimated that somewhere between 50 and 70% of expecting women experience lower back pain. And the pain is not the only problem. It can interferes with sleep, cause headaches, make walking uncomfortable and just generally make what should be a wonderful time in life, miserable.

Why does back pain occur in pregnancy? As the baby progressively grows in size, it is unavoidable that more strain will be placed on the womans abs and back. Poor posture, maternal weight gain, and a surge in joint-loosening hormones like relaxin and estrogen can contribute as well. With all of these issues, the vertebrae can become misaligned, causing muscle and joint pain. Fortunately, this common ailment can be alleviated through safe chiropractic care. This professional care can both alleviate pain as well as prevent its occurrence in the first place. There is no reason to needlessly suffer for months. This is one discomfort of child bearing you can actually do something about!

Each licensed practitioner has received the training necessary to provide treatment to mothers-to-be. His or her training will always include specific schooling on treating expectant mothers. There are even some practitioners who specialize in this form of treatment. Specific techniques are used in order to make chiropractic care safe during pregnancy for both the mother and baby. The practitioner will also be able to provide you with tips on how to minimize your pain and strengthen your back so as to improve your posture. These treatments and tips can both alleviate pain as well as improve your chances for an enjoyable and healthy delivery.

In addition to seeking care to relieve back pain, pregnant women also turn to chiropractic care during pregnancy because of its high success rate at turning babies in the breech position. The Webster Technique is one technique that is commonly used to naturally relax the ligaments surrounding the uterus so as to shift the baby without the need for an invasive procedure. This procedure does not place any pressure on the baby. There are no risks associated with this technique. The Webster Technique is typically reserved for the last month or so of pregnancy as the breech position then becomes a matter of concern.

Mothers-to-be will always experience discomfort. Receiving the proper care will allow you to stay as pain-free as possible and will reduce the bodys stress so as to improve your delivery. Chiropractic care during pregnancy is one way to make this a most enjoyable time in life, rather than a pain in the neck (or back).
