LED retrofits are becoming popular for motorcycle tail lights. There are reasons for this preference as it is unaffected by vibrations which are prevalent on road conditions. The modifications are also available for turning signal warnings and courtesy lights.
Motorcycle led lights draw less current than the incandescent lighting fixtures. They can provide brighter illumination and is more visible than the ordinary bulbs. The current drawn by a stock unit is about 600 milliamps for the tail light and 2.7 amps when the brake light is used. The replacement led consumes only 185 milliamps and 1.78 amps respectively. There is also a substantial reduction for the motorcycle turn signals as well with no measurable heat involved.
It is essential to be careful when making a decision to select the alternative lighting system for the need of the bike rider. A special fixture using superior quality material makes a bearing on both functionality and look. Low-priced and substandard bulbs may end up giving less illumination than an original bulb. Not all led replacements that are not up to standards come out as cheap alternatives.
If your bike is of vintage model, collector's item or antique, it would be a good idea to keep some in stock. Older kinds of lighting systems offer poor illuminating qualities. LED types provide a better quality of like while retaining its' originality. This also applies to the turning light bulbs as the original housing is still used. One should note that there is a difference from custom fitting to the original bike reflector housing than installing add on kits that can be attached to the rear of the unit.
The difference is so dramatic and noticeable. The running lights are brilliant and have a strong saturated color. The entire taillight assembly virtually explodes with brightness and color when brakes are engaged given that extra margin of safety. The fast engagement time is also noticeable as against the stock bulbs. Light flashers and modulators work well with the led bulbs.
On the custom bike scene, there is a significant expense just to customize a stock light and other illumination sources. What you are getting here is hand-made, custom fitted lighting system. They are engineered to meet your specifications. Not everyone would want to do this.
Original equipment connectors are used as much as possible to do away with splicing failures. Turning signals could be incorporated into the brake light system. One fact about motorcycle tail lights using LED technology is their long life span of up to 100,000 hours of use.
